How Overthinking Can Ruin a Perfect Vacation
Travelling and overthinking is never a good combination if you are planning on enjoying a guilt free vacation. I experienced this personally on one of my recent trips, and that is when I decided to make an effort to enjoy my future travels without second‑guessing every little choice. Here is what I learnt from my experience.
How does the overthinking start?
It starts with rethinking every small decision, whether it’s ordering a coffee that costs a few rupees more than back home, skipping an activity you actually wanted to try, or putting back a souvenir because it suddenly feels too expensive. But overthinking expenses isn’t the only guilt we carry on vacations. It often spills into other corners too, like feeling bad about eating unhealthy food or skipping routines. And just like with money, suddenly we start questioning the dessert and the afternoon naps. And before we realize every small joy starts coming attached with a ton of decision making.
What did i learn from the experience?
Weirdly, the guilt was never really about indulgence. I was spending, eating and enjoying sensibly the whole time. It was more about the mindset the unnecessary pressure I decided to put on myself and the invisible fear of enjoying something that might feel wasteful later. All of it came from a make‑believe urge to feel more responsible and in control.
How to plan a guilt free vacation?
Keep it simple. Start by giving your self the permission to enjoy little things without second guessing. Budget wisely, but keep some extra for small indulgences. Experience the food and culture. Buy that souvenir. Because years later, the memories we make end up paying for themselves.
It always helps to remember that vacations are meant to be freeing. Leaving behind the guilt while travelling is what makes the journey memorable. Do share that one guilt you leave behind while travelling in comments I would love to read them
