The Beauty of Adult Friendship: Why It Feels Different as We Grow
I don’t exactly remember where, but I came across this quote — “We don’t make friends, we recognize them” — and it just stuck with me.
It got me thinking about how, over the years, some people didn’t really enter my life in a big, dramatic way. They just showed up… and somehow decided to stay.
Honestly, some days, it doesn’t even feel that random. Like they were always meant to be there.
Those are the friendships that have made me feel the safest. The ones that grew quietly through everyday moments.
Random conversations.
Shared food and laughter.
Just showing up without being asked.
If you ask me, friendship should be the easiest relationship in your adult life.
That being said, it doesn’t mean you take your friends for granted. You don’t stop showing up or caring for them. But if you constantly feel guilty for not replying instantly, for missing a call, or for not saying yes to every invite, your friendship might need a little sprinkle of adulting.
Because as we grow, life just gets… fuller. There’s work, responsibilities, family, the occasional bad day. And sometimes, you just go through those quiet phases where you need a bit of space.
Real friendship should have room for all of that—and sometimes even more.
And maybe… that’s the kind of adult friendship we all actually deserve.
Don’t forget to share your thoughts on adult friendship—I’d love to read them.
