North of North Season 1 Review: A Hidden Gem on Netflix Worth Watching
When people ask where I’m from, I say, Think of the furthest place north you’ve ever been. Now keep going. Keep going. Yep. That’s us.
I started North of North because I was intrigued by its setting. A comedy-drama set in a remote Arctic community is not something you come across every day. I went in expecting beautiful landscapes and a glimpse into a culture I knew very little about. What I got instead is a funny, heartfelt, comforting, and surprisingly relatable story about identity, family, belonging, and finding the courage to build a life that feels truly your own.
What North of North Is Really About
North of North follows Siaja, a young Inuk woman living what seems like an almost perfect family life in the close-knit Arctic community of Ice Cove.
Everything seems to work for her, a loving home, familiar neighbors, and years of deep rooted traditions looking out for her in the form of a supportive community, except for her relatable struggle with self identity, which pushes her to question the life she has always known.
The series lets you see her journey as she slowly leave behind her insecurities and start to create a life of her own, all while balancing the expectations of family and community.
The Characters That Made Me Stay
One of my favorite things about the show is how nobody is portrayed as perfect. Everyone is simply trying to navigate life the best way they can, which makes it easy to connect with them.
Siaja
Siaja is undoubtedly the heart of the series.
What I loved most about her character is how relatable her journey feels. She isn’t trying to become someone completely different. Instead, she is trying to understand who she already is beneath the expectations placed upon her. Her awkward moments, self-doubt, determination, and resilience make her incredibly easy to root for. Watching her slowly gain confidence in herself is definitely one of the most rewarding parts of the series.
Ting
Ting adds another layer to the story by showing how relationships can become complicated when people begin to grow apart. His character helped explore themes of marriage, partnership, and the challenges of adjusting when life doesn’t unfold exactly as expected.
Neevee
Neevee represents another aspect of the show’s emotional depth. Through her relationship with Siaja, we see the complicated balance between family support and family expectations. Their interactions might feel a little frustrating sometimes, but their bond always feels believable.
The People of Ice Cove
The neighbors, friends, elders, and towns people bring warmth, humor, and charm to nearly every episode. Their presence creates a sense of community that feels real and lived‑in.
Why North of North Feels So Comforting
What makes North of North special for me is the way it introduces you to a culture that may initially feel unfamiliar, yet somehow leaves you feeling completely at home. I went in expecting cultural differences but instead I found myself connecting with the heart, humor, and everyday lives of the people in Ice Cove.
Another thing I appreciated is how the series captures the mix of comfort and complexity that comes with living in a close-knit community. Through Siaja’s journey, we see both the support and the pressure that come from being surrounded by people who know and care about you. On one hand, the community offers belonging, tradition, and a strong support system. On the other, it brings expectations that can make personal growth and independence feel complicated. It is a dynamic that feels deeply human and surprisingly universal.
The show also beautifully balances serious themes with genuine warmth. Even when characters are dealing with uncertainty, heartbreak, or personal struggles, the show never loses its warmth. The humor and the emotional moments both feel earned rather than forced.
My Favorite Themes From North of North
While there is a lot to appreciate about the series, these were the themes that stayed with me the most.
Identity
Siaja’s entire journey in the show is about understanding who she wants to be. The show keep reminding us that personal growth often begins when we allow ourselves to question the paths we have always followed.
Community
North of North is one of those few shows that capture the feeling of community so well. We see the people of Ice Cove supporting one another, celebrating together, and occasionally getting involved in each other’s business more than they probably should. Yet beneath all of it is also a genuine sense of care and belonging.
Tradition and Change
An interesting aspects of the series is how it explores the balance between preserving traditions and embracing change, showing how both can coexist without diminishing the value of either.
Resilience
The series subtly portrays how life in Arctic comes with its own challenges, and is not always easy. But rather than focusing on hardship alone, the show emphasizes the resilience, humor, and joy that help people move forward.
The Arctic Setting Deserves Its Own Spotlight
The setting of North of North is every bit as important as its characters. It is one of those unique things about the show that makes it standout from other shows. At first, the frozen landscape appears vast, harsh, and almost isolating. But as the story unfolds, those snow-covered expanses become the perfect canvas for stories of community, resilience, and human connection.
The setup also highlights the uniqueness of Inuit culture, by carefully weaving it in the everyday life of the people, which adds an element of authenticity and depth to the story.
The entire setting with its snow, silence, and vastness creates a sense of isolation, which makes the warmth of Ice Cove’s people shine even brighter, showing how even in the harshest places, laughter and belonging can thrive.
Why You Should Watch North of North
I think North of North is a perfect choice if:
- You enjoy character-driven stories.
- You appreciate small-town community dynamics.
- You like comedy mixed with genuine emotional depth.
- You enjoy discovering cultures and traditions through storytelling.
- You love unique settings that feel as important as the characters themselves.
