Metros vs Small Town: Do we really have to choose?

If you live in a Metro city like I do, you’ve probably noticed how often people talk about planning little “escapes” to smaller towns. To be honest, I catch myself thinking about it more often than I’d like to admit—usually on days when everything feels a bit too overwhelming. Sometimes it’s pure nostalgia for where we grew up, and other times it’s that slower, quieter lifestyle all of us have seen online—which, thanks to social media, is almost like a daily reminder.

Now look at it from the other side, and you’ll notice something just as interesting—people in small towns quietly craving the fast, convenient, opportunity-filled life of metros. I’ve seen it firsthand in conversations with friends and even family—there’s this curiosity about what it must feel like to have everything within reach, to not have to think twice before ordering in, stepping out late, or chasing a new opportunity.

This romanticization of life on both sides is actually kind of funny—everyone, in some way, is looking at the other side and wondering what it might be like.

The more I think about it, the more it feels like it’s not really about one life being better than the other. It’s more about what feels missing in our life right now.

When things get overwhelming, we start craving simplicity.
And when life feels too slow or limited, we naturally want more excitement and opportunity.

Except in this whole process, we usually forget something that’s surprisingly simple, yet very important:

“Our urge to create”

So even if we almost always have a pros-and-cons list for metros versus small towns ready, I’d say—let’s just skip that conversation.

Instead, be okay with not constantly choosing your “forever.”
Keep staying where your energy feels right, and don’t hesitate to move when that feeling shifts.

And most importantly, wherever you are—small town or big city—

“Don’t forget to create.”

Because that’s the only thing that will truly make any place feel like home.

So what will you choose—fast city life, small-town charm, or stepping away from the dilemma altogether? Would love to read your thoughts in comments.
