5 Meaningful Life Lessons I Learned From Ted Lasso
There are some shows that entertain us for a while and then slowly fade from memory. And then there are shows like Ted Lasso that leave us with a fresh perspective on life. For me, beneath the humor, heartwarming moments, and memorable characters from the show, has always been stories and lessons about people trying to navigate relationships, setbacks, self-doubt, and new beginnings. Over the years, the show has given me plenty to think about. While some lessons made me look at my relationships differently, others reminded me to be a little kinder to myself and the people around me. Here are five lessons from Ted Lasso that have stayed with me.
1. Sometimes People Just Need Someone Who Believes
If there is one thing that is generously present in every season of Ted Lasso, it is encouragement. Like many people, my first instinct when someone shares a problem is to offer advice or help them find a solution. But watching Ted interact with people made me realize that not everyone is looking for answers. Sometimes, people simply need someone who believes in them. Someone who can remind them that they are more capable than they think, give them a little reassurance that they will figure things out, along with the comfort of knowing that even if they don’t, they won’t have to face it alone.
2. Starting Over Is Never Easy
One thing that I absolutely love about Ted Lasso, is its honesty in portraying new beginnings. We see Ted move across the world, Rebecca rebuild her life after divorce, and Roy trying to figure out who he is beyond football. None of these journeys are neat or effortless. They are filled with doubts, awkward moments, setbacks, and mistakes, which is why they feel so relatable and honest. Most of the shows that I have watched in the past tend to glorify new beginnings, which always made me extra critical of myself, I kept thinking that struggling during a new beginning meant I was doing something wrong. But this show reminded me that discomfort is often part of growth, and starting over may not be easy, but is always worth the effort.
3. It Is Still a Man’s World, but with Women Who Refuse to Let Go
Whether it is Rebecca fighting to be taken seriously as a club owner, Keeley constantly proving that she deserves a seat at the table, or the women’s team having to work harder to create opportunities for themselves, the different moments in the show, much like the experiences we encounter in our everyday lives, remind us how different the journey can be for women. Seeing the women in the show support, encourage, and stand by one another is a reminder that even if it takes working a little harder, speaking a little louder, or proving ourselves a little longer before being given the same opportunities as men, we can never stop showing up. We owe it to ourselves, to the women who came before us, and to the generations that will come after us.
4. A Little More Kindness Never Hurts
In a world where everything seems to be moving a little too fast, and everyone is busy carrying struggles we know nothing about, kindness often feels like the simplest thing we can offer. Yet, it is also one of the things we forget most easily. Choosing kindness when life is difficult, when people disappoint us, or when things don’t go our way takes a lot of courage. Watching Ted practice it so effortlessly has slowly taught me not to assume the worst in people, but instead to offer them grace, second chances, and the space to be imperfect. Kindness might not solve all my problems, but if it can make life a little gentler for me and the people around me, I think it is always worth a try.
5. We Were Never Meant To Figure Everything Out Alone
Seeing how Ted has Beard, Rebecca has Keeley, and the players have their teammates to lean on has opened me up to the idea of reaching out for help and support when I need it. In a way, it has made me appreciate the people I have in my own life a little more. I am also learning how the support does not always come in the form of grand gestures, sometimes it is a conversation, a word of encouragement, someone checking in at the right time, or simply having a person who listens without judgment. I think maybe the simplest way to value relationships is to let people support us when we need it and be there for them when they need us.
For me, the show has been a gentle reminder to be kinder, more patient, and a little more willing to trust both myself and the people around me. And maybe, that is why I keep coming back to it. If you have watched the show, I would love to know, which lesson stayed with you, do share your thoughts in the comments, I would love to read them. And, if it is still on your watchlist, don’t forget to read our reviews before binging the show.
